PRIN 2022
The PRIN program funds two-year projects which, due to their complexity and nature, may require the collaboration of several professors/researchers and/or whose funding needs exceed the normal availability of individual institutions.
Projects may address topics related to any field of research within the three macro-sectors determined by the ERC:
- Life Sciences (LS);
- Physical sciences, chemistry and engineering - Mathematics, physical sciences, information and communication, engineering, universe and earth sciences (PE);
- Social Sciences and Humanities (SH);
Funding
PRIN is funded for the year 2022 with 741.814.509,15 euro (net of the share allocated to evaluation and monitoring activities). The amount of 222.544.352,75 euro, equal to 30% of the allocation intended for funding the submitted proposals, is reserved for projects submitted by PIs under 40 years of age on the date of publication of this call.
The total allocation intended for project funding is distributed as follows:
- LS macro-sector: €259,635,078.20, equal to 35% of the total available funding (of which €77,890,523.46 is reserved for projects submitted by PIs under the age of 40 as of the date of this call);
- PE macro-sector: €259,635,078.20, equal to 35% of the total available funding (of which €77,890,523.46 is reserved for projects submitted by PIs under the age of 40 as of the date of this call);
- SH Macro-sector - Social Sciences and Humanities: 222.544.352,75 euro, equal to 30% of the total available allocation (of which 66.763.305,83 euro reserved for projects submitted by PIs under 40 years of age on the date of this call).
A minimum amount of 218.144.020,80 euro, out of the total financial allocation of the call, must be allocated to the regions of Southern Italy (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily).
Who can participate

- permanent professor/researcher;
- fixed-term researcher referred to in paragraph 3, letters a) and b) of article 24 of law no. 240 of 30 December 2010, whose contract is not charged to funds earmarked for specific projects already subject to public funding.

Periods of maternity leave (18 months for each child), parental leave, and other documented reasons (such as, for example, long-term illness of the PI, exceeding 90 days) constitute exceptions to the age limits for access to the quota reserved for PIs under 40 years of age.

Participation in the PRIN 2022 call is permitted for all those who, in any capacity, are funded under the PRIN 2020 call.
Maximum funding amount and disbursement
The maximum funding for each project is 250,000.00 euros.
The contribution for the implementation of the projects is transferred in a single advance payment directly to the universities/entities/institutions hosting the research units.
Research units
The minimum number of research units is 2 (the research units within the same project must necessarily belong to different universities/entities/institutions).
Any involvement of national research organizations (up to a maximum of one per project) must be explicitly indicated by providing for a research sub-unit within the PI's research unit.
Duration
