In 2010, AVIO AERO and the Polytechnic University of Bari established an integrated multidisciplinary laboratory called “Energy Factory Bari” (EFB) to develop research and development activities in areas of common interest in the aerospace and energy sectors.
The laboratory is located within the university campus of Bari and is connected with other laboratories operating in the fields of electrical, information, and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari to develop experimental investigations.
The objective of the laboratory is to coordinate joint research activities, identify themes for the growth of the Apulian Aerospace Technology District, monitor the international scientific landscape in order to identify innovative ideas, and create an area of integrated expertise and human resources to streamline efforts, in accordance with the interests of both partners.
The research areas involved in the laboratory's activities also include:
- high-speed electrical machines;
- high-frequency power converters;
- control systems;
- fluid mechanics and energy systems;
- machine design;
- control systems for gas turbines;
- aeronautical sensors and engine accessories;
- data analysis and software.
Currently, the laboratory has approximately 40 researchers. Among the main laboratory equipment are instruments for designing, testing, and characterizing electrical machines and power electronics devices in the power range up to 200 kW.
