Il Prof. Luciano LAMBERTI è nato a Bari il 24 marzo 1968. Ha conseguito la Laurea in Ingegneria Meccanica con lode il 6 novembre 1995 presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria del Politecnico di Bari. Ha conseguito nel marzo 2000 il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Ingegneria dei Sistemi Avanzati di Produzione presso il Politecnico di Bari. Nel biennio 1998-1999 è stato Visiting Research Scholar nel Department of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanics and Engineering Science della University of Florida (Gainesville, USA). Nel 2001 è stato Senior Research Associate nel Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering del Illinois Institute of Technology, (Chicago, USA). Dal 2009 é Visiting Faculty nel Department of Mechanical Engineering della Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, USA). Nel biennio 2010-2011 é stato Visiting Faculty nel Department of Chemistry and Physics della University of Southeastern Louisiana (Hammond, USA).
Dal 1 Luglio 2002 al 27 Aprile 2012 è stato ricercatore universitario (confermato dal 01.07.2005) presso la 1a Facoltà di Ingegneria del Politecnico di Bari nel settore scientifico-disciplinare ING-IND/14 “Progettazione Meccanica e Costruzione di Macchine”. Risultato idoneo nella valutazione comparativa del 01.12.2010, ha preso servizio in data 27.04.2012 come professore associato nel SSD ING-IND/14 presso il Politecnico di Bari. Dal 27.04.2015, è professore associato confermato nel SSD ING-IND/14 sempre presso il Politecnico di Bari.
Presso il Politecnico di Bari, il Prof. Lamberti ha tenuto, a partire dall’A.A. 2002-2003, gli insegnamenti di “Meccanica dei Materiali e Progettazione Meccanica” (Laurea Triennale), “Tecniche Ottiche” (Laurea Specialistica) e “Progettazione Assistita di Strutture Meccaniche I” (Laurea Quinquennale) per il Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Meccanica.
Nell’A.A. 2001-2002, il Prof. Lamberti ha assunto per supplenza l’incarico nelle discipline “Costruzione di Macchine” e “Disegno Tecnico Industriale” (Laurea Quinquennale) e “Disegno Assistito da Calcolatore” (Laurea Triennale) per il Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Meccanica presso l’Università degli Studi della Basilicata.
Negli A.A. 2008-2009 e 2009-2010, è stato docente a contratto di “Progetto di Aeromobili” del Corso di Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria Aerospaziale e Astronautica presso l’Università del Salento.
Relatore o correlatore di circa 350 tesi di dottorato, laurea quinquennale, triennale, specialistica/magistrale in Ingegneria Meccanica, Ingegneria Aerospaziale e Biomeccanica, il Prof. Lamberti è stato anche revisore di tesi di dottorato in Bioingegneria per la Scuola Interpolitecnica di Dottorato e correlatore di tesi di specializzazione in Fisica Sanitaria per l’Università Cattolica “Sacro Cuore” di Roma.
L’attività di ricerca svolta dal Prof. Lamberti ha inizialmente riguardato problematiche di Sintesi Strutturale concretizzandosi nella stesura di codici numerici per l’analisi ed ottimizzazione di strutture. Sono stati messi a punto algoritmi che integrano Gradient Based Optimization e Global Optimization: in particolare, Successive Linearizzazioni, Trust Region, Simulated Annealing, Harmony Search, Big Bang-Big Crunch e Firefly Algorithm. I software sviluppati sono stati applicati con successo all’ottimizzazione di forma di grandi strutture di tipo skeletal (travature reticolari e telai) con diverse migliaia di variabili di ottimizzazione e di vincoli nonché al design preliminare di pannelli rinforzati impiegati nei tanks per veicoli da lancio riutilizzabili (RLV - Space Shuttle di seconda generazione).
Oltre agli studi di ottimizzazione strutturale, una considerevole parte dell’attività di ricerca del Prof. Lamberti riguarda le tecniche di analisi sperimentale delle sollecitazioni. Particolare rilievo è stato dato alle tecniche di interferometria moiré e speckle e all’olografia. Tra le principali applicazioni fatte: la misura di spostamenti di strutture aeronautiche, il monitoring dei pattern di instabilità per pannelli rinforzati, il rilievo topografico di componenti di forma complessa, il monitoring delle distorsioni termiche in componenti elettronici, la misura di spostamenti per caratterizzazione meccanica di materiali compositi ed iperelastici.
L’attività numerico-sperimentale ha coperto anche applicazioni di biomeccanica e bioingegneria: studio delle problematiche connesse con impianti endodontici con analisi comparativa di vari perni dentali; studio numerico della risposta strutturale della mandibola in presenza di distrazione ortodontica; messa a punto di metodi ibridi per la caratterizzazione meccanica di tessuti biologici; studio del comportamento meccanico del cordone ombelicale con tecniche moiré; determinazione delle deformazioni delle pareti cardiache con integrazione di tecniche tagging e moiré; elasticità cellulare; ottimizzazione della microstruttura di scaffold.
Il Prof. Lamberti ha condotto numerose ricerche anche nel campo delle nanoscienze occupandosi, in particolare, di fenomeni di super-risoluzione in presenza di illuminazione evanescente (rivelazione di nano-cristalli, studio della rugosità superficiale e del campo di tensioni in fenomeni di contatto) e misura di spostamenti e deformazioni su scala atomica di cristalli di carburo di silicio con dislocazioni.
Nel campo della nanobioingegneria, il Prof. Lamberti ha condotto ricerche sull'elasticità cellulare con l’obiettivo di riprodurre la risposta meccanica di membrane cellulari di ovociti sottoposte a nanoindentazione con sonde AFM (Microscopia a Forza Atomica). A tal fine ha contribuito a sviluppare un approccio ibrido che combina le misure AFM con modelli agli elementi finiti e tecniche di ottimizzazione. In tale contesto, sono state determinate le proprietà meccaniche delle membrane cellulari di ovociti tenendo conto del grado di eterogeneità della struttura analizzata, si é studiato l'effetto della presenza di stress residui nel processo di caratterizzazione meccanica con AFM, si é sviluppato un framework in grado di discriminare il contributo elastico dal contributo viscoso nella risposta a nanoindentazione, si sono studiati gli effetti delle complesse relazioni tra risposta visco-iperelastica, geometria della punta e velocità di indentazione sul processo di caratterizzazione di campioni di materiale "soffice".
Tra le attività di ricerca effettuate in collaborazione con l’industria si devono menzionare: studi numerici di elementi di fusoliera per un transonic cruiser con sviluppo di un codice di calcolo per l’analisi e l’ottimizzazione seriale di pannelli rinforzati per uso aero-spaziale; sviluppo di sensori opto-elettronici per il rilievo in-vivo di elementi dentali; sviluppo di sensori ottici per il controllo di qualità di componenti industriali; integrazione di teste ottiche di misura in macchine CMM; sviluppo di tecnologie moiré per la misura in situ delle tensioni residue che si sviluppano nei coating durante il processo di sputtering; misura di spostamenti in grandi strutture aeronautiche; taratura di blocchetti di misura.
Il Prof. Lamberti è autore di più di 160 pubblicazioni di cui oltre 65 rivista internazionale e/o in capitoli di libro. Ha tenuto relazioni invitate presso istituti di ricerca e convegni internazionali in Europa, USA e Asia. Il suo articolo “Application of plasmons to the determination of surface profile and contact strain distribution” ha ottenuto il Flyde Electronics Prize come migliore articolo pubblicato nel 2010 nella rivista internazionale Strain (Wiley).
Il Prof. Lamberti ha valutato proposte di ricerca per la Fondazione delle Scienze del Cile, per la Fondazione Nazionale delle Scienze della Svizzera e per il Centro Nazionale delle Scienze della Polonia. Ha inoltre valutato per la Technical University of Riga (Lettonia) il programma di ricerca “Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Transport and Aeronautics”. È stato revisore di proposte editoriali per Bentham Science Publishers (USA), Hindawi (USA) e Wiley (UK). Selezionato nel 2012 come Esperto Valutatore delle proposte di ricerca del VII Programma Quadro della Comunità Economica Europea. Selezionato nel 2014 e nel 2015 come Esperto Valutatore delle proposte di ricerca del programma Horizon 2020 della Comunità Economica Europea. Responsabile scientifico del laboratorio di Tecniche Ottiche del Dipartimento di Meccanica, Matematica e Management del Politecnico di Bari (Italy), é anche socio fondatore del “Center for Experimental and Numerical Mechanics for Materials and Structures” (CENMS) S.r.l., con sede a Bari (Italy) dal 2009. Dal 2012 é titolare di un brevetto sul contouring di elementi di forma arbitraria.

Luciano LAMBERTI, born in Bari (Italy) on March 24, 1968, received a MS in Mechanical Engineering (cum laude) in 1995 and a PhD in Advanced Engineering Systems in 2000 from Politecnico di Bari (Bari, Italy). In 1998-1999, he was Visiting Research Scholar in the Department of Aerospace, Mechanics and Engineering Science of the University of Florida at Gainesville (USA) where he cooperated to a NASA research project on reusable launch vehicles. In 2001, Prof. Lamberti worked as Senior Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering of the Illinois Institute of Technology at Chicago (USA). Since 2009, Prof. Lamberti is a Visiting Faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Northern Illinois University at DeKalb (USA) where he spends one or two research periods per year. In 2010-2011, he has been a Visiting Faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Physics of the University of Southeastern Louisiana, Hammond (LA), USA.
From 2002 to 2012, Prof. Lamberti worked as assistant professor of “Mechanical Design” in the Politecnico di Bari (Italy) from which he received tenure in 2005. On December 2010, Prof. Lamberti has been promoted to the rank of associate professor of “Mechanical Design”, officially appointed to this position by Politecnico di Bari on April 2012, and received tenure in 2015. He has been advisor or co-advisor for over 350 BS/MS/PhD/Specialization theses/dissertations in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics and Medical Physics.
Prof. Lamberti’s main research interests are in the field of Structural Optimization, Experimental Stress Analysis, Measurements at the nano-scale, Biomechanics and Bioengineering. In the field of Structural Optimization, he developed numerical algorithms based on the combination of gradient based and global optimization techniques. These algorithms have been successfully applied to design optimization of skeletal structures with several hundreds of variables and thousands of constraints as well as to preliminary design of stiffened panels for reusable launch vehicles (i.e., Space Shuttles of second generation).
In the field of Experimental Stress Analysis, Prof. Lamberti has conducted studies on electronic components, biological specimens and industrial components in order to reconstruct 3-D shape of objects, evaluate thermal distortions and residual stresses, identify constitutive behavior of materials with high nonlinearities (for example, biological membranes). He specialized in interferometric techniques such as speckle, moiré and holography. Prof. Lamberti implemented simulated annealing, harmony search and stellar evolution optimization algorithms in hybrid methodologies for mechanical characterization of materials.
Bioengineering and biomechanics research activities regard mandibular distraction osteogenesis, dental biomechanics, tissue differentiation and engineering, and, more recently, mechanical characterization of umbilical cord with moiré techniques, determination of cardiac wall deformations by combining tagging and moiré methods, cell elasticity, optimization of scaffold microstructure.
Prof. Lamberti has conducted extensive researches also in the field of nanosciences and nanotechnology focusing on optical super-resolution, illumination with evanescent waves and surface plasmon resonance theory, measurement of strain fields at the atomic level. Since 2009, he studies cell elasticity by developing finite element models to mimic the structural behavior of cell membranes submitted to nanoindentation with AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) probes; FE models are then integrated with optimization techniques in order to determine visco-hyperelastic properties of cell membranes such as the zona pellucida membrane surrounding oocytes. Prof. Lamberti has investigated in detail the effect of residual stresses on the determination of ZP properties, developed a characterization framework that allows ZP hyperelastic behavior and viscous effects to be clearly separated, and studied from a very general perspective the complex relationships between visco-hyperelastic response of soft matter samples, geometry of the AFM probe and indentation rate (related, hence, to the measurement protocol) involved in the mechanical characterization process of soft samples.
Prof. Lamberti has authored over 160 technical papers with over 65 articles published in ISI journals and book chapters. Prof. Lamberti has given lectures in USA, Europe and Asia upon invitation of research institutions and international conferences. His article “Application of plasmons to the determination of surface profile and contact strain distribution” has received the Flyde Electronics Prize for the best paper published in 2010 in the Strain journal.
Since 2004, Prof. Lamberti serves as a reviewer for some 50 international journals and he currently reviews 30 articles per year. Since January 2012, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the ISI journal Computers and Structures (Elsevier, I.F.=2.134). Since February 2015, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the ISI journal Advances in Materials Science and Engineering (Hindawi, I.F.=0.744), coordinating the review process of articles submitted for publication. Since May 2014, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Mathematics (Hindawi), coordinating the review process of articles submitted for publication. From November 2013 to December 2014, he has been the Regional Editor for Europe of the journal Current Biomedical Engineering (Bentham Science Publishers).
Prof. Lamberti evaluated research proposals for the Academy of Sciences of Chile, the National Science Foundation of Switzerland and the National Science Centre of Poland. He evaluated the “Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Transport and Aeronautics” research program for the Technical University of Riga (Latvia). He evaluated editorial proposals for Bentham Science Publishers (USA), Hindawi (USA) and Wiley (UK). He has been included in the 2012 list of Expert Evaluators for the FP7 Program funded by the European Community, in the 2014 and 2015 lists of Expert Evaluators for the Horizon 2020 Program funded by the European Community. Since 2014, Prof. Lamberti is the Vice Chair of the Optical Methods technical division of SEM for which he edits the volume of proceedings collecting the papers on optical techniques presented in the annual meeting of the society.
Prof. Lamberti is the scientific responsible of the Optical Techniques laboratory settled in the Dipartimento di Meccanica, Matematica e Management of the Politecnico di Bari (Italy). He is also a founding member of the “Center for Experimental and Numerical Mechanics for Materials and Structures” (CENMS) S.r.l., settled in Bari (Italy) in 2009. Since 2012, he holds the BA2012A000027 patent “Optical device for contouring of generally shaped elements”.
