Saverio Mascolo si è laureato in ingegneria elettronica, con lode, nel 1991 e ha conseguito il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca nel 1995. Dal 1995 è ricercatore universitario al Dipartimento di Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica del Politecnico di Bari dove dal 2001 ricopre il ruolo di professore associato. Nel 1995 e nel 1999 ha lavorato come ricercatore all’Università della California a Los Angeles su vari progetti NSF, EPRI e Darpa. Dal 2001 è consulente accademico esterno dell’Uppsala University nel progetto “Wireless IP” finanziato dalla Swedish Research Initiative for Strategic Research. Ha ricoperto visiting positions a Inria, Sophia Antipolis, Francia and a FTW, Vienna, Austria. E’ autore di oltre 100 pubblicazioni su riviste, libri e conferenze internazionali. Si è occupato di sistemi ad eventi discreti, controllo nonlineare, sistemi caotici, controllo del traffico nelle reti di comunicazione. I suoi interessi più recenti sono focalizzati sui protocolli di comunicazione per distribuzione di audio/video su Internet e sui sistemi peer-to-peer. E' Associate Editor delle riviste IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Computer Networks, Elsevier e Journal of Internet Engineering, Klidarithmos Press. E' Senior Member dell'IEEE. Ha vinto il Cisco Research Academy Award nel 2013 e il Google Faculty Award nel 2014.
Saverio Mascolo is full professor of Automatic Control and Head of the Electrical and Information Engineering Department of Politecnico di Bari.

He is IEEE fellow for "contributions to modeling and control of congestion in packet networks".

He is ACM senior member.

He got the Laurea degree (cum laude) in Electronics Engineering in 1991 and the Ph.D in 1995 both from Politecnico di Bari.

He has been visiting scholar in 1995 and visiting researcher in 1999 at the University of California Los Angeles where he has been involved and has been co-PI in projects on networks and control funded by NSF, Darpa and EPRI. Since 2001 he has been external academic consultant at the University of Uppsala for the “Wireless IP project” funded by the Swedish Research Initiative for Strategic Research. He has held visiting positions at Inria, Sophia Antipolis, France and at FTW, Wien, Austria.

He has authored or co-authored more than 170 papers in international journals, books or conferences. He has 4 US and 4 italian granted patents.

His research activity has focused on discrete-event systems, manufacturing systems, non linear chaotic systems, nonlinear backstepping control, congestion control in data networks, server control, multimedia congestion control. Recently he is focusing on algorithms for sending audio/video over the Internet, adaptive video streaming and congestion control for web real-time communications (WebRTC).

In 2013, he has been the recipient of the Cisco University Research Program Award for the research entitled "Architecture for Robust and Efficient Control of Dynamic Adaptive Video Streaming over HTTP".

In 2014, he has been the recipient of the Google Faculty Award for the research entitled "Congestion Control for Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC)" in 2014.

He is Associate Editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. He has been Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (IEEE TAC), January 2008- Dec. 2012.

He is Associate Editor of the Computer Networks Journal (COMNET), Elsevier since 2007, and Associate Editor of IEEE Control Systems Conference Editorial Board since 2003.

By consulting Publish or Perish on March 27, 2018, Saverio Mascolo has an h-index= 36 and a g-index= 79.

Saverio Mascolo is founder of the spinoff Quavlive srl that offers a platform for video streaming.

Saverio Mascolo has worked on the following projects:

• “Control Methods for ATM congestion control” (1998-2000) funded by NSF. Co-PI with Prof. M. Gerla at University of California at Los Angeles. This project was funded after S. Mascolo published a papers at Infocom 1996 in which for the first time congestion control in packet networks was studied using control theory and a Smith predictor.

• “Complex Interactive Networks/Systems Initiative” (1999-2004) funded by Electric Power Research Institute and the Deputy under Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology through the Army Research Office. S. Mascolo was in charge of leading the collaboration between the Networking group of prof. M. Gerla (UCLA) and the control group of prof. F. Paganini at UCLA. An outcome of this project was the Westwood TCP congestion control that introduced an end-to-end bandwidth estimation in packets networks for controlling the TCP congestion control window. The publication at Mobicom 2001 has around 1000 citations.

• FIRB “Traffic models and Algorithms for Next Generation IP networks Optimization” (TANGO), PNR 2001-2003, funded by MIUR. S. Mascolo was PI of the research unit at Politecnico di Bari. During this project TCP Westwood+ was designed, implemented in the Linux Kernel and included in the official Linux distribution since kernel 2.6. TCP Westwood+ contains a new mechanism to estimate the bandwidth available in a packet networks that corresponds to implement an anti aliasing filter in a packet networks.

• COST Action 290 “Traffic Engineering and QoS Control in Multimedia-enabled Wireless Networks” (2006-2008). S. Mascolo was italian representative in the Management Committee.

• PRIN 2005-2006 FAMOUS (Fluid Analytic Models Of aUtonomic Systems) codice: 2005093971. S. Mascolo was PI of the research unit at Politecnico di Bari. The main outcome of this project was a feedback-based control for providing real-time services over the 802.11e MAC.

• "TCP over wireless". PI of the project funded by Financial Tradeware plc (2005-2006). Outcome: Large experimental test and refining of Westwood+ TCP for real use over 3G systems.

• "Audio/video over IP" PI of the project funded by Financial Tradeware plc (2008-2009). Outcome: a rate-besed congestion control for packet video was proposed that is currently at the base of the web tv of Politecnico di Bari (webtv.poliba.it).

• PON PLATINO (2012-2015) "PLATform for INnOvative services in future internet” funded by MIUR. He was PI of the research unit at Politecnico di Bari. Main activities were: a) congestion control for webrtc; b) feedback control for adaptive video streaming

• CISCO Award (CG #574954) funded by “Cisco-University Research Program”, 2013. S. Mascolo was the PI of the research entitled "Architecture for Robust and Efficient Control of Dynamic Adaptive Video Streaming over HTTP".

• Google Faculty Award 2014. S. Mascolo was the PI of the research entitled "Congestion Control for Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC)"

• PON Res Novae (2013-215).Reti, Edifici, Strade – Nuovi obiettivi virtuosi per l’ambiente e l’energia. Funded by MIUR. S. Mascolo was PI of a sub-research unit at Politecnico di Bari.
- Project MAIVISTO “Massive Adaptive Video STreaming over the Internet Using the Cloud” funded by Italian University Minister (2014-2016). PI of the entire project with 5 partners.

• Industrialization project “Brevetti+” funded by MISE and managed by Invitalia. PI at Quavlive srl, spin-off from Politecnico di Bari.

• Project CLIPS “a CLoud-based platform for Immersive adaPtive video Streaming”, Call “HORIZON 2020” PON I&C 2014-2020. PI of the entire project with 3 partners (2017-2020).

S. Mascolo has also collaborated to the following projects:

• • T-NOVA, an Integrated Project co-funded by the European Commission / 7th Framework Programme, aiming at designing and implementing an integrated management architecture, including an Orchestrator platform, for the automated provision, management, monitoring and optimization of Virtualised Network Functions over Network/IT infrastructures. Grant Agreement no. 619520. Its duration is 36 months (January 2014 – December 2016)

• The BONVOYAGE project aims at designing, developing and testing a platform optimizing multimodal door-to-door transport of passengers and goods. European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 635867 (2015-2018)

• The ATENA (Advanced Tools to assess and mitigate the criticality of ICT components and their dependencies over Critical InfAstructure) project will produce a set of tools that, implementing innovative models, methodologies and algorithms for security assurance, and interacting with the available smart components of a CI, will increase the level of cyber-physical security and resilience of underpinning CI & IACS. Funded by EU H2020 (2016-2020)
