Water resource management between climate challenges and opportunities

THE TOPIC WILL BE DISCUSSED AT THE POLITECNICO DI BARI ON THE OCCASION OF TWO EVENTS. AMONG THE GUESTS IS PROFESSOR Günter Blöschl, WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS Stockholm Water Prize, considered the “Nobel FOR water”

The Italian scientific community in hydraulics and hydrology will gather at the Politecnico di Bari for two events scheduled from Monday 8 to Friday 12 September. It begins on the 8th, at the Quagliariello Campus, with the 2025 Hydrology Days organized by the Italian Hydrological Society, entitled Addressing climate and territorial challenges: Scenarios, risks and adaptation strategies and continuing until Wednesday the 10th. The following day and the day after, also at the Campus, the PhD Days and Marchi Lecture of the Italian Hydraulic Group will take place.

The Marchi Lecture is an event in memory of Professor Enrico Marchi, one of the founders of Italian hydraulics, held at various universities with the aim of showcasing the developments of the most advanced research in the field. The event features the participation of a leading international scientific figure and two Italian researchers under 40, while the PhD Days represent an important opportunity for growth and exchange for doctoral researchers in the fields of Hydraulics, Hydraulic and Maritime Engineering, and Hydrology.

The guest of honor will in this case be the Austrian hydrologist Günter Blöschl (in the photo below), professor at the Alma Mater University of Bologna, winner this year of the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize, considered the “Nobel Prize for water,” for his contribution to understanding the impact of climate change on floods and water resources.

On Thursday 11, Professor Blöschl will speak at the Marchi Lecture in dialogue with Professor Mauro Fiorentino, professor at the University of Basilicata and president of the Italian Hydraulic Group, on the topic of hydraulic risk, from scientific aspects to technical ones (at 11 a.m. in the Domus Sapientiae main lecture hall, at the Department of Architecture, Construction and Design).

The prediction and reduction of flood risk, water resource management strategies, and the study of hydrological processes are the central themes of Professor Blöschl’s work, for which he is recognized as a world authority in hydrology. His analyses have made a decisive contribution to improving knowledge on the possibility of reducing flood risk and on water resource management.

Another event worth noting is the round table on possible scenarios related to water resources, in particular the issue of drought, which will be held as part of the Hydrology Days on Tuesday 9 September, starting at 12 noon in the Attilio Alto main lecture hall. The debate will include representatives of the Southern Apennines District Basin Authority, the Apulia Region, Acquedotto Pugliese, ISPRA, CHIEAM Bari – the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies – and the Return Foundation, a partnership aimed at strengthening research chains on environmental risks (information on participation in the two events at 3486716446).

The debate at the Politecnico will therefore be an opportunity to discuss the role of cutting-edge research, to understand how it can support new and more efficient solutions for water resource management in the near future. An opportunity to take stock of the state of the art and foster collaboration among institutions.
