Educational Objectives
The educational objectives of the bachelor's degree course in Design support the profile of a designer as an “integrator of skills,” possessing both theoretical and applied preparation based on interdisciplinary knowledge and methods capable of fostering engagement with the contemporary socio-cultural and technological changes. This condition takes on particular significance when related to the territories of southern Italy and to the interweaving of the tangible and intangible heritage with which they are endowed, which call for models of growth and development to which “design project work” can effectively contribute.

Admission
The course is structured into two teaching cycles (2+1), each with specific aims oriented toward providing students with a “design culture” which, through a structured laboratory methodology, is recognized in three areas combined with one another:
1) product and product-service,
2) interiors and exhibition design,
3) graphic artefact and communication
The FIRST CYCLE, intended for basic training, corresponds to the first two years of the course. According to principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability, learning concerns the complexity of design practices—which also includes subjects such as representation techniques, humanities and social sciences, material and formal studies, technological-digital disciplines, and production processes—also considered in relation to the resources of the territory to which the scientific and cultural project of the degree course is addressed.
The SECOND CYCLE, which corresponds to the third year, is distinguished by the completion of training dedicated to the “context studies” with which design culture interacts, and by the preparation of the degree thesis, to which particular scientific value is assigned. This final path focuses on a study plan aimed at equipping the student with multiverse methodological and critical-speculative skills, such as to enable them to address the full range of different design articulations (metadesign, concept, and technical-executive development) required by the current realities of the various employment sectors.

The Skills
Upon obtaining the degree diploma, the student must:
- be able to develop projects for consumer products and product-services both in relation to material, formal, and performance requirements, usability, and interaction with the user, and in relation to technologies and production processes
- be able to develop visual communication projects by elaborating infographic languages and grammars in relation to the specific use of tools and techniques.
- be able to develop public and private Interior, Exhibit, and Spatial Design projects, both permanent and temporary, also with the aim of expanding perception and interaction between space and user
This is equivalent to possessing adequate preparation:
- on the meaning of “design project work” in the combination of historical, theoretical, and methodological skills, as well as in digital operational tools;
- on technical and methodological knowledge relating to the visual, communicative, and infographic, analog and digital representation of artefacts, spaces, and contexts;· on the role of design as a tool for innovation and socio-territorial development in constant dialogue with manufacturing and cultural-creative industries;
- on the properties of materials for understanding processing and transformation processes supported by digital technologies
EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES
Professional opportunities
The main career opportunities for graduates in Design are concentrated in the design of material and immaterial artifacts in the contexts of freelance practice, and public and private bodies operating in the field of the development of new products and services, including those related to the cultural and creative industries.
They may also work professionally, directly or through specific collaborations, in design studios and firms, enterprises and companies operating in the field of the design of living spaces, materials, product-service systems, furnishings, retail, exhibition design, and visual and multimedia communication, including interaction and information design.

Subsequent Training
At the end of the study programme, the bachelor's graduate in Design will possess the full set of skills necessary to continue their specialist studies in Master's Degree programmes (two-year) available in Italy and abroad, and which, starting from what is already offered by the Politecnico di Bari as an integrated second-cycle pathway (Design for Cultural and Productive Contexts, in Italian and English) encompass the various and innovative educational-professional and research-oriented articulations that represent design culture and how it evolves. They may also access first-level master's programmes (one-year), taking the opportunity of education characterized by specific professional fields.
