THE BACHELOR'S DEGREES OF POLIBA | DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURE SCIENCES FOR HERITAGE
Bachelor's Degree Course in “Architecture Sciences for Heritage”
Overview
The Bachelor's Degree Course in “Architecture Sciences for Heritage” is an international inter-university course, delivered in conventional mode (in-person) at theUniversity “Ismail Qemali” of Vlorë (Albania) and at the Polytechnic University of Bari (administrative headquarters of the Course). Through a structured and assisted mobility, students will complete the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th semesters at the University of Vlorë and the 3rd and 6th semesters at the Politecnico di Bari, where they will discuss their thesis and obtain their degree.
The Course is a three-year training program in Architecture focused on the themes and issues of Knowledge and Design for Heritage, understood in its broadest and most current sense.
The educational path is structured over three years organized on a semester basis. In its common path, this program is articulated according to two interpretations of the meaning of Heritage, one referring to architectural-archaeological Heritage and the other to urban-landscape Heritage. Training according to these two interpretations is completed, in addition to monographic courses, in the laboratories of the second and third years.
Students may choose to enhance their curricular training by selecting one of the three optional integrated courses, offered in the second semester of the third year. Two of these provide in-depth study regarding the two interpretations of the meaning of Heritage; the third offers an in-depth study of technical and digital cultures applied to architectural design and related to Heritage themes.

Educational Objectives
Responding to needs expressed by the reference territories (Adriatic Ionian and Mediterranean macro-regions), the Course is dedicated to training a professional figure oriented towards the themes and issues of Knowledge and Design for Heritage, understood in its broadest sense as a good inherited from the past (far or recent) to which a value is collectively attributed, linked to its significance or its potential for renewal. An idea of Heritage that refers to 'extraordinary' heritage, architectural-archaeological and monumental, but also to 'ordinary' heritage. An idea of Heritage that unfolds in the architectural, urban, and landscape dimensions. This new way of looking at Heritage and understanding it as a resource for the development of cities, territories, and communities (Faro Convention, 2005), while at the same time raising issues of recognizability and accessibility, of re-signification and reuse, of protection and enhancement, requires new skills capable of combining conservation and transformation. It requires new modes of knowledge and interpretation and new techniques of composition, design, and planning that make it possible, case by case, to combine conservation concerns related to historical-documentary value with transformative concerns related to its re-signification and its correspondence to the needs of contemporaneity.
