The Symphony Orchestra of the Metropolitan City returns to the Politecnico di Bari. The programme includes three evenings of open-air music, with free admission, on 17 and 24 June and 22 July in the Cherubini atrium on campus. These are three of the six stops of Orchestra in Festa for the Universities (an equal number is scheduled at the University of Aldo Moro), a special initiative included in the broader summer festival Musiche sotto le stelle metropolitane, the 2026 edition of the summer concert season of the Symphony Orchestra.

The programme for the entire event was presented today at the Metropolitan City Hall (in the photo below) and includes 33 events, from 9 June to 1 August, in the squares of twenty-three municipalities, as well as in university venues, hospitals, parishes and sports centres, with the aim of bringing citizens, students, faculty and patients closer to symphonic music.

There are three concert formats: Sanremotop. The winner is… dedicated to the most famous songs that triumphed at Sanremo in the 1980s and 1990s, with original arrangements by Giacomo Desiante. The event on 17 June at the Politecnico falls within this format. The second appointment, on 24 June, is instead entitled Made in Bari – Singers and songwriters from Bari and the metropolitan area, with original arrangements by Christian Ugenti and the solo voice of Lidia Schillaci. The third appointment, on 22 July, is No grazie, a roundup of those who have never competed at Sanremo, with original arrangements by Vittorio Pasquale and the solo voice of Luciana Negroponte.

«Music, like culture, remains a tremendously powerful lever for fostering the development of the individual and society» said the rector of the Politecnico, Umberto Fratino, commenting on the initiative. The Politecnico di Bari is taking part for the second consecutive year. «In the era of artificial intelligence – Fratino added – we rediscover the irreplaceable value of human creativity, which must not fear technology, nor allow itself to be replaced by it, but must continue to govern and guide it towards the common good».

At the presentation of Musiche sotto le stelle metropolitane were the metropolitan mayor, Vito Leccese; the rectors Fratino, for the Politecnico, and Roberto Bellotti, for the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”; the metropolitan councillor delegated to socio-cultural promotion and tourism and to the Metropolitan Orchestra, Francesca Bottalico; the general director of the University Hospital Company of the Bari Polyclinic, Antonio Sanguedolce; the president of CUS (University Sports Centre) Bari, Antonio Prezioso; the artistic director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Metropolitan City, Vito Clemente; and mayors and councillors from the municipalities involved.
