About us

Politecnico di Bari has always understood the importance of language training and established the CLA (University Language Centre) over 25 years ago with funding from the EU European Social Fund. The Centre is located on the "Ernesto Quagliarello" campus, on the 3rd floor of the "Z" block opposite the Student Centre.

The Centre offers Politecnico students and staff services designed to acquire and practice foreign language skills. It also offers;

• 24 workstations equipped with online computers for language courses and practice;
• a selection of audio, video and software material;
• a wide selection of original language texts as well as exam preparation materials.

Why visit the Language Centre?

The Centre offers activities for those whose objective is to

• prepare for the Politecnico curricular English language exams;
• prepare for external language certification exams;
• improve their knowledge of foreign languages before an Erasmus mobility abroad;
• improve foreign language skills, also in the technical field, before entering the job market.

The teaching programmes are designed to offer a variety of courses for those whose aim is to learn a foreign language. The Centre offers two types of language learning experience: timetabled language courses and individual training laboratory sessions. There are also periodic language skills workshops.

Language teaching at the Centre

Language Courses

Courses are currently available in English, German, Spanish and Italian for foreign students; these are organised by level and held by mother-tongue teachers. Participation is free and groups are limited to a fixed number of students. At the end of each course there is a final test and an attendance certificate is issued to participants. Courses are divided into two sessions per year, running concurrently with the two semesters of the academic calendar. The 40-hour courses generally last ten weeks, based on two 120-minute lessons per week. There are also shorter courses of 20 hours based on one lesson per week. Schedules and timetables are published at the beginning of each session. Access to courses is administered in line with Language Centre regulations, which are published before each session and available online.

Language Support Workshops

Language Support Workshops are periodic one-hour group sessions held at the Centre. They explore specific skills such as listening and writing, the use of English in professional contexts (such as job interviews or presentations) or strategies for preparing Cambridge and IELTS exams. Workshops are structured to promote active learning and provide guidance for consistent self-study.

As part of the Language Support Workshops, the Centre also offers periodic AI Language Practice Workshops. These are led by an instructor to demonstrate the multiple ways which AI platforms can be used to facilitate self-study.

Individual support for foreign language study

Training Labs

Training Labs are an ideal solution for students who are unable to follow courses. They are based on individual or group tutoring and are run by mother-tongue teachers or Language Centre staff. The calendar of days and times for Labs is updated and published on Microsoft Teams as well as on the Language Centre page of the Politecnico website. Access is free for all staff and students of Politecnico di Bari.

During Training Labs, participants can learn more about specific features of foreign language study according to their individual needs. Students may also use sessions to prepare for language certificate examinations such as Cambridge, IELTS, Linguaskill, Goethe Institut and Istituto Cervantes.

Curricular English Language Exams

The Language Centre runs courses to prepare students for internal B1 and B2-level English language exams, which form part of the Politecnico di Bari study programme. These exams are also held at the Language Centre. Exam programmes, dates and all other related information can be found on the Language Centre page of the Politecnico website.
