RESEARCH

The research has been devoted to several questions of Mathematical Analysis, but, mainly, is concerned with nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations of variational type and has given rise to 44 papers published in international journals and, moreover, to a monograph for a course given at I.C.T.P. (Trieste) in 1988.


The research subjects can be summarized as follows (the subject mainly investigated are those denoted by (a) and (b)):


a) Existence and multiplicity of solutions for variational problems with lack of compactness:

i) Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations of elliptic type, considered in all the space or in unbounded domains, whose solutions are stationary states corresponding to solitary wawes in nonlinear equations of Schroedinger type and of Klein-Gordon type,
ii) Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations of elliptic type, having nonlinear part growing in a critical way from the point of vue of the Sobolev embedding and that are related to questions of Differential geometry as the Yamabe problem. In those situations the usual variational tools cannot be applied in a standard way.


b) Existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for singularly perturbed elliptic equations related to the study of mathematical models of chimical reactions, of morphogenesis, of biology (chemotaxis) and of population dynamics.

c) Existence of positive solutions to some free boundary problems that arise in the study of mathematical models for vortex rings in fluid dynamics.

d) Symmetry breaking of solutions for Partial Differential Equations related to the study of reaction-diffusion phenomena.

e) Classical problems of real analysis and measure theory.
